For anyone shopping for an F30, heres the key differences between pre-LCI (2012-2015) and LCI (2015-2019):

  • Updated headlights (LED standard on LCI)
  • Revised tail lights
  • Updated iDrive with touchscreen (some models)
  • B-series engines replace N-series (more efficient)
  • Minor interior updates
  • Improved sound insulation

The LCI is worth the premium imo, especially for the B-series engines which are more reliable and efficient.

LCI is definitely worth the premium. The B-series engines are significantly better than the N-series in terms of efficiency and reliability.

Main differences: LCI (2015+) got LED headlights as standard, updated iDrive with touchscreen on some models, revised bumpers, and the B-series engines replaced the N-series. The B47 diesel is more refined than the N47, and the B48 petrol is more efficient than the N20. If budget allows, always go LCI.

From a reliability standpoint, the LCI is significantly better. The N47 timing chain issue is gone with the B47, and the N20 timing chain problems are gone with the B48. The LCI also has an updated ZF 8HP with smoother shifts. The price difference between pre-LCI and LCI is usually only 2-3k EUR which is well worth it.

If you are are interested in the 6 cylinder diesels, the 335D and 330D are the same engine pre LCI and LCI. Personally I prefer the pre LCI rear lights, so if it was my money and I was going for either of those engines I would buy the pre LCI.
