High Mileage BMW — What to Expect

BMWs can absolutely last 200,000+ km with proper care. But certain things will need attention at specific milestones. Here's the roadmap.

100,000 km — The First Big Service

This is where deferred maintenance catches up with you.

Expect to replace:

  • Water pump + thermostat (if not already done)
  • Valve cover gasket
  • Oil filter housing gasket
  • Spark plugs + coil packs
  • All fluids (transmission, differential, brake, coolant)
  • Serpentine belt + tensioner
  • Cabin + engine air filters

Inspect:

  • Control arm bushings
  • Brake pads and rotors
  • Timing chain condition (N20, N47)
  • Cooling system hoses

Budget: €1,500-3,000 if everything is done at once

150,000 km — Wear Items Pile Up

Expect to replace:

  • Front control arms (bushings worn)
  • Rear trailing arm bushings
  • Sway bar end links
  • Possibly a second water pump
  • Brake pads + rotors (second set)
  • Battery (second one)
  • Possibly injectors (N54)

Inspect:

  • Rear subframe mounts (E46)
  • Turbo condition (wastegate play, oil leaks)
  • Steering rack for play
  • Wheel bearings

Budget: €1,000-2,500

200,000 km — Major Refresh Territory

Expect to replace:

  • Possibly the entire cooling system again
  • Suspension components (shocks, springs if sagging)
  • Clutch (manual transmission)
  • Possibly alternator
  • Possibly starter motor
  • Window regulators (if not already done)
  • Various rubber hoses and seals

Consider:

  • Transmission rebuild or fluid change (auto)
  • Differential service
  • Rod bearing replacement (M cars)
  • Turbo rebuild or replacement

Budget: €2,000-5,000

250,000+ km — The Long Haul

At this point, you're maintaining a classic. Everything is on the table:

  • Engine may need top-end refresh (valve seals, VANOS)
  • Transmission may need rebuild
  • Electrical gremlins become more common
  • Rust becomes a concern on older cars

The key: If the engine and transmission are healthy, everything else is just wear items. A well-maintained BMW can go 300,000+ km.

Which Engines Last Longest?

Engine Expected Lifespan Notes
M54 400,000+ km Nearly indestructible
N52 300,000+ km Very reliable
B58 300,000+ km (projected) Too new for full data but excellent so far
N54 250,000+ km Needs more maintenance but bottom end is strong
N55 250,000+ km Reliable with PCV maintenance
N20 200,000+ km If timing chain is addressed
N47 200,000+ km If timing chain is addressed
N63 150,000-200,000 km Depends heavily on maintenance

The Golden Rule

Maintenance history matters more than mileage. A 200,000 km BMW with full service records is a better buy than a 100,000 km BMW with no history.
