The N55 valve cover gasket is a common leak. Heres how to replace it yourself:

Parts needed:

  • Valve cover gasket kit (~60 EUR)
  • New valve cover bolts (they stretch)
  • RTV sealant for corners

Time: about 3-4 hours

The trickiest part is removing the valve cover without breaking the plastic tabs. Go slow and be gentle. Also make sure to torque the bolts in the correct sequence (BMW TIS has the diagram).

Saved about 500 EUR doing this myself vs the dealer quote.

Bimmercode tutorial is spot on. Digital speedo is the first thing everyone codes on their F30. Takes 2 minutes and makes a big difference.

Did this on my 335i last month. The hardest part is removing the intake manifold to access the valve cover bolts. Make sure to torque the valve cover bolts to spec (8 Nm) in the correct sequence - start from the center and work outward. Over-torquing will crack the plastic valve cover. Also replace the eccentric shaft sensor seal while youre in there - its a common oil leak point and costs only 15 EUR for the seal.
