BMW dealer maintenance is expensive. Here's what you can easily do yourself and save hundreds per year.

Oil change (every 10-15k km)

The most basic maintenance. BMW says 15k km intervals but most enthusiasts recommend 10k km, especially for tuned cars.

  • Oil: BMW LL-01 or LL-04 approved (Castrol Edge, Liqui Moly, Shell Helix)
  • Filter: Mann or Mahle OEM-quality filters
  • DIY cost: 50-80 EUR
  • Dealer cost: 200-350 EUR
  • Difficulty: Easy (30 minutes)

Brake pads and rotors

  • Front pads: Every 30-50k km
  • Rear pads: Every 40-60k km
  • Rotors: Every 60-80k km
  • DIY cost: 150-300 EUR (parts)
  • Dealer cost: 500-1000 EUR
  • Difficulty: Medium (1-2 hours per axle)
  • Note: Need to reset brake pad sensor with ISTA or BimmerCode

Spark plugs (petrol engines, every 40-60k km)

  • Use NGK or Bosch OEM plugs
  • DIY cost: 30-60 EUR
  • Dealer cost: 150-250 EUR
  • Difficulty: Easy on inline-6, harder on V8

Air filter (every 30-40k km)

  • DIY cost: 15-30 EUR
  • Dealer cost: 80-150 EUR
  • Difficulty: Very easy (10 minutes)

Coolant flush (every 2 years)

  • Use BMW-approved coolant only (blue)
  • DIY cost: 30-50 EUR
  • Dealer cost: 150-250 EUR
  • Difficulty: Medium

Transmission fluid (every 60-80k km)

BMW says "lifetime fill" but this is nonsense. Change it.

  • ZF 8HP: Use ZF Lifeguard 8 fluid + filter kit
  • DIY cost: 100-150 EUR
  • Dealer cost: 400-600 EUR
  • Difficulty: Medium-Hard

Tools you need

  • Jack and jack stands (or ramps)
  • Socket set (metric)
  • Oil filter wrench (specific to your engine)
  • Torque wrench
  • Brake bleeder kit
  • ISTA or BimmerCode for service resets

What maintenance do you DIY?

I do everything myself on my E90. The biggest money saver is the transmission fluid change. BMW says the ZF 6HP is "sealed for life" but after changing the fluid at 120k km, the transmission shifted noticeably smoother. The old fluid was dark brown - definitely not "lifetime".

For E9x owners: the oil filter housing gasket is a common leak point. It's a 20 EUR gasket and about 1 hour of work. Dealers charge 300+ EUR for this.

Great guide. I'd add valve cover gasket to the list for N52/N54/N55 engines. It's a very common leak that BMW charges 500+ EUR to fix. DIY cost is about 40 EUR for the gasket and 2 hours of work.

Also, for anyone with an N54 - the charge pipe is a known weak point. The stock plastic charge pipe cracks under boost. Replace it with an aluminum one proactively for about 80 EUR. Much cheaper than the tow truck when it blows on the highway.

YouTube is your best friend for BMW DIY. Channels like 50sKid, ShopLifeTV, and FCP Euro have step-by-step videos for almost every common repair on every BMW model.

I went from knowing nothing about cars to doing my own oil changes, brake jobs, and even a water pump replacement. Saved probably 3000 EUR in the last two years on my F30.
