Brake fluid change - how often and DIY method

BMW recommends brake fluid change every 2 years. Is this really necessary? My F30 is 4 years old and Ive never changed the brake fluid. If I should change it, can I do it myself? I have a one-man brake bleeder kit. Is DOT4 the correct spec for F30? Also, does the brake fluid need to be coded/registered in the car computer after changing?

ZF Lifeguard 8 is the safest choice. Its the original spec fluid. The cheaper alternatives meet spec but I prefer to use the original for peace of mind.

change the filter/pan too. its only 100 EUR extra and youre already under the car. no point doing a half job
