BMW Rough Idle — 8 Causes from Easy to Expensive
BMW Rough Idle — 8 Causes
Your BMW shakes, stumbles, or hunts at idle. Here are the causes, ordered from cheapest to most expensive fix.
1. Vacuum Leak — €0-50
A cracked intake boot, loose hose, or failed PCV valve lets unmetered air into the engine.
- Symptoms: Rough idle, lean codes (P0171/P0174), hissing sound
- Test: Spray carb cleaner around intake connections while idling — RPM change = leak found
- Fix: Replace the cracked hose or boot
2. Dirty MAF Sensor — €10-20
The mass airflow sensor gets contaminated with oil vapor and dirt.
- Symptoms: Rough idle, poor throttle response, lean codes
- Fix: Clean with MAF-specific cleaner (CRC MAF Sensor Cleaner). Never touch the wire.
3. Spark Plugs — €30-80
Worn plugs don't ignite the mixture consistently.
- Symptoms: Rough idle, misfires, poor acceleration
- Fix: Replace all plugs
4. Ignition Coils — €60-200
Failed coil packs cause misfires on specific cylinders.
- Symptoms: Rough idle, flashing CEL, misfire codes on specific cylinder
- Fix: Replace the failed coil (or all of them if they're original and old)
5. VANOS Solenoids — €50-200
Dirty or failed VANOS solenoids cause incorrect valve timing.
- Symptoms: Rough idle, loss of low-end power, VANOS codes
- Fix: Replace solenoids
6. Fuel Injectors — €200-600
Clogged or leaking injectors cause uneven fuel delivery.
- Symptoms: Rough idle, misfire on specific cylinder, fuel smell
- Fix: Clean (ultrasonic) or replace injectors
7. Carbon Buildup (Direct Injection) — €300-600
Carbon deposits on intake valves restrict airflow unevenly.
- Symptoms: Rough idle that gets worse over time, misfires, reduced power
- Fix: Walnut blasting
8. Valve Cover / PCV Failure (N55) — €300-500
The integrated PCV diaphragm in the valve cover cracks, causing a vacuum leak.
- Symptoms: Rough idle, oil leaks, whistling noise, boost leak
- Fix: Replace entire valve cover assembly
The Diagnostic Approach
- Scan for codes — they'll point you in the right direction
- Check for vacuum leaks (spray test or smoke test)
- Inspect spark plugs and coils
- Check VANOS solenoids
- If no codes and no obvious cause, consider carbon buildup (direct injection engines)
