BMW Won't Start — Clicking, Cranking, or Nothing at All
BMW Won't Start — Complete Diagnosis Guide
Your BMW won't start. Before you call a tow truck, let's figure out what's happening based on what you hear (or don't hear) when you turn the key.
Scenario 1: Nothing Happens — No Sound at All
You press the start button and... silence. Dashboard may or may not light up.
Most likely: Dead battery
- Check if dashboard lights come on. If dim or nothing — battery is dead.
- Try jump starting (use the under-hood terminals, not the trunk battery)
- If jump start works, get the battery tested. It may need replacement.
Other causes:
- Key fob battery dead — hold the fob against the steering column and press start
- CAS (Car Access System) fault — key not being recognized
- Blown main fuse
- Corroded battery terminals
Scenario 2: Clicking Sound but No Crank
You hear a rapid click-click-click or a single loud click.
Rapid clicking: Battery has some charge but not enough to turn the starter
- Jump start or charge the battery
- If the battery is new, check for parasitic drain or bad ground connection
Single loud click: Starter solenoid engaging but motor not turning
- Starter motor failure — solenoid works but motor is dead
- Bad connection at the starter
- In rare cases, seized engine (try turning the crank by hand with a socket on the crank bolt)
Scenario 3: Cranks but Won't Fire
The engine turns over normally but doesn't start.
Fuel-related:
- Out of fuel (check gauge — sender can be inaccurate)
- Failed fuel pump (listen for a hum from the rear when you turn ignition on)
- Clogged fuel filter
- Failed HPFP (N54 — very common)
Spark-related:
- Failed ignition coil(s)
- Worn spark plugs
- Crankshaft position sensor failure (engine won't know when to fire)
Air-related:
- Massive vacuum leak
- Failed MAF sensor giving incorrect readings
Other:
- Camshaft position sensor failure
- Timing chain jumped (N20, N47 — engine cranks but sounds different)
- Immobilizer fault (EWS/CAS not authorizing start)
Scenario 4: Starts Then Immediately Dies
Engine fires for 1-2 seconds then stalls.
Causes:
- Fuel pump dying — provides enough pressure to start but can't sustain it
- Massive vacuum leak
- Idle control valve stuck (older models)
- DME fault — engine starts but DME shuts it down
Scenario 5: Starts but Runs Rough
Engine starts but shakes, misfires, or runs poorly.
See our "BMW Rough Idle" article for detailed diagnosis.
The Quick Diagnostic Checklist
- Dashboard lights on? → If no, battery/electrical
- Hear clicking? → Battery or starter
- Engine cranks? → Fuel, spark, or air
- Starts then dies? → Fuel delivery or vacuum leak
- Scan for codes → Always the best first step if you have a scanner
