My N54 DME died (common issue with MSD80). Need to replace it but BMW wants 2000 EUR for a new one plus coding. Can I buy a used DME and clone my old one? What tools do I need?

Ive heard about Xprog and some Chinese cloners but not sure whats reliable.

You can clone the DME with Xprog. Its not that difficult but you need to be careful with the ISN (individual serial number). If the ISN doesnt match, the car wont start.

For the MSD80 DME (N54), you can clone it with an Xprog or Orange5 programmer. The process involves reading the flash and EEPROM from the old DME, then writing them to the new one. The ISN (individual serial number) also needs to be transferred for the CAS (car access system) to accept the new DME. Its not difficult if you have the right tools but one mistake can brick the DME. If youre not confident, find a specialist who does this regularly.
